An absolute superstar in the Soviet 1970s and 80s, Oleg Yankovsky was at the peak of his career in Balayan's popular tragicomedy. Sergey, a man in his prime, tries to juggle everyday life (mother, colleague, lover, wife, child), there is only a thin line between pretending to be something and lying. Also, between what is called life and emptiness. The late socialist genre of the tragicomic melodrama is disturbingly perfect in its disintegration here. (bw)
